mtn nigeria

The Situation

MTN Nigeria is part of the MTN Group, Africa’s leading cellular telecommunications company. On May 16, 2001, MTN became the first GSM network to make a call following the globally lauded Nigerian GSM auction conducted by the Nigerian Communications Commission earlier in the year. Thereafter the company launched full commercial operations beginning with Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt.

With an aggressive network rollout plan, MTN Nigeria is rapidly increasing its subscriber base, the company’s objective was thus to have complete information, accessible in real time on their subscriber, financial and operational data to support enterprise-wide decisions and initiatives.

MTN Nigeria also needed an implementation partner that could conduct an unbiased packaged software evaluation as well as provide definition for the initial data mart project.

The Solution

Tavia documented the requirements, designed the data warehouse and ETL components, established design guidelines and best practices, and delivered the Financial Data Mart now being used by the Client to make accurate business decisions and enable financial forecasting.

The MTN Nigeria Financial Data Mart provides the organization's sales and financial analysts with a wealth of newly accessible information. In addition, demonstrated skills to manage change across multiple stakeholders supported by effective communications, benefits tracking and design authority.

The Result

MTN Nigeria acknowledged the benefit gained in terms of being able to make rapid and accurate judgments on the viability of sales and marketing efforts.

Additionally, thanks to the framework established by Tavia, new data mart projects are being delivered at lower costs and in shorter timeframes.

Client Support Staff have also been trained on the use of the infrastructure we have put in place and process flow for data extraction from new and emerging sources.

Access bank plc

The Situation

Access Bank Plc is a full service commercial bank operating through a network of over 80 branches and service outlets located in all major commercial centres and cities across Nigeria.

Access Bank Plc was incorporated in 1989 as a private limited liability company with ownership residing with Nigerians and Nigerian institutional investors. The Bank was subsequently listed on the Nigerian Stock Exchange in 1998. In January 2002, it was successfully recapitalized and consequently came under its current leadership and only recently, the Bank was appointed a Settlement Bank by the Central Bank of Nigeria and acknowledged as Nigeria's "Most Improved Bank".

Following, the post-consolidation exercise in the banking industry, competition for market share is at an all time high with critical success factors being quick decision making and proactive response to change. Access Bank wanted to position itself in these frontiers by adopting a “measure to manage” approach.

The Solution

Tavia focused mainly on providing a snapshot of Business performance against predefined KPI’s at a glance. These KPI’s were elicited using the Balanced Scorecard Methodology.
Tavia successfully completed the architecture, design, data modeling, building and information exploitation of the EDW in Accessbank, Nigeria.

The warehouse was implemented in Oracle 10g R2.  ETL processing was done using Oracle Data Warehouse Builder.  Some of the more complex business rules and consolidations were also done in custom PL/SQL code.

Exploitation was implemented using BusinessObjects XI reports distributed with Infoview and ad hoc reporting using BusinessObjects XI Webi.  In total the base warehouse consisted of more than nine data marts (star schemas).  The largest of these star schemas stores detail Daily general ledger items and this populates the contents of both the daily balance sheet and daily profit and loss account.

The Result

In spite of a tight time schedule and challenging conditions, the project was successfully accomplished in five months.
Faster decision-making was achieved branch wide and Access Bank was able to develop reports which represent “one version of the truth”. In addition, the banks KPIs showed considerable and consistent improvement.
